Breaking News
My birthday often falls over a camp. A somewhat depressing occurrence for me. And so I knew that the hunky hubby and I would be celebrating sometime this week instead of on the actual day.
Perhaps it would be Monday. The hunky hubby said to just be ready and he would do the rest. Monday came and went. Surely Tuesday… Wednesday. I was sure it would be Wednesday. Thursday donned hot and sunny and I was so certain that Thursday was the day that I packed babysitter bags for the three cyclones and put out some nice clothes for myself for the hunky hubby to pack when he revealed his surprise.
Now I love surprises. Almost more than I like the actual gift. But I am a wee bit of a control freak and tend to make it very difficult to surprise me as I am worrying if the kids are taken care of and if we will have enough time to both eat and watch a movie and get the kids home for bedtime so that I can get to bed by 9:30 or 10:00 so that I can get up in time to write.
Thusly when things began to look like they would not work the hunky hubby and I began to argue. He told me that there were still plenty of days in the week and to stop freaking out. I tumbled into despondency. We weren’t going to go Thursday after all. And of course at that point I wondered if I ever wanted to go on a date with the hunky hubby again. I was fairly sure that I didn’t. We would still be married of course, we just wouldn’t talk or make eye contact or eat within 50 feet of each other or share the same air.
Then at the very last minute he began to gather our family for a shopping trip that he had talked about during our earlier fated discussion. We traveled to Wenatchee and he had to drop off paint ball gear at one of the guys house. We got there and the Mom of the paintball guys rushed out of her house gathered up the boys and asked “So what movie are you seeing?”
Yeah! He had surprised me! I was so thrilled. I love being surprised.
True, some of my fears were realized. We were late for the movie. We did not have time to eat dinner. But we did get Chinese take out. And we did not get the boys into their beds until 2 hours after their bedtime. Thusly we were eating dinner at about the time I should have been snuggling into my bed. And therefore I was not able to write the next day.
But it was one of the best birthdays I have ever had. I absolutely love being surprised. He even bought me not one but two beautiful hard cover books to read. Such a fun day.
I love surprises too. Very rarely am I actually surprised because I’m usually the one making arrangements to surprise someone.
