I had an epiphany at the writer’s conference this weekend. With all of the lectures on pitching and branding and connecting with important people, folks begin to look at others not as fellow human beings but as tools to achieving their every evil writing dream. And so some folks rush about the conference pitching madly to the editors and exchanging cheesy business cards with other writers at an alarming rate. And the human element begins to be lost.

And yes I’ll admit it. I made my business card with some craft bond, 100% cotton resume paper, earth toned card stock, and my personal computer. But I consider it good enough for the moment. I then proceeded to exchange the aforementioned cards with several individuals. But I think it is important to remind myself that each person at the conference is an individual. They all have dreams and fears and think that they really should have snorked down 5 of those miniature carrot cakes that were quite literally the same size as a chocolate covered cherry or one of those baby bottles of nail polish intended to be kept in microscopic purses, or a small shot of whiskey. Being the mature individuals that we are, my lovely sister and I referred to them as “carrot cake shots” the whole day even though her husband’s home made root beer is about the strongest beverage I can tolerate.

So…some words of advice. Remember that people are people. They are not a one stop step to publisning Nirvana. They are individuals and must be treated so.

Yes, I agree about remembering the people behind the business card, or in my case, the person behind the nursing or EMT license. In my years of finding camp nurses to minister at summer camp, the Lord continues to impress me not to press or guilt a person into serving. They are people with needs and He (our Great God and Savior) has certain folks in mind to fill those positions. It is my job to follow His lead and then leave it up to Him. Many nurses that I talk to have other summer needs than caring for summer campers. It is so important for me to recognize their needs and just love them as God’s child.

I’m so glad that you had such a good time with your sister.

    Love to you.
