This week Jenn and I exchanged our entries for the ACFW First Impressions Contest. I marked up hers and she marked up mine and then we tried to fix everything we could. Although I’ve never been able to place in these things, I’m realizing that this is how you get better. If the contest hadn’t come up I wouldn’t have gone back and revised my first five pages and short synopsis all over again. I’ve revised them so many times already. But both my five pages and synopsis improved because of Jenn’s critique. She has critiqued both of these before…but because we went back and did it again I now have an even stronger piece. So yeah, I’m going to keep doing contests. I might never win, but eventually I hope to come away with a manuscript I can be really proud of.
