Writing Contests, Sand Skirmishes, and Attacking Crabs
Our good friend Gorp, invited our family to come visit him in Canon Beach the same week I needed to zip down to the OCW Awards banquet to see if my published magazine article and unpublished children’s book went beyond finaling in their contest.
So we combined the trips and harkened unto the beach to visit Gorp before I left Scruffy and the boys to go to my awards banquet.
They didn’t have any fun at all.
The trip was very calm and studious,
involving zero wrestling or pesky tricks.
Thankfully, they did break up the monotony by taking a quiet stroll.
Much brotherly love was witnessed by one and all.
A highlight of the trip was discovering that the shallows were filled with attacking crabs.
One of their number was briefly taken prisoner, before we returned him to the waves that he loved.
Before I left, Sweet Boy#3 gently reminded me not to be sad if I didn’t win, that even third place was good.
I went determined to enjoy the food and my best friend.
We proceeded to do exactly that!
And despite my carefully contained expectations …
I took home first in both categories!
Even making some new friends in the process.
Yes, our brakes went out and our running lights quit working. Yes, we squeaked and rattled into the hushed drive of Cannon Beach Conference Center in our countrified vehicle and might possibly have woken slumbering residents due to the plethora of dying car noises. But it was such a crazy and fabulous adventure. Thank you, Gorp, for having us down to your sanctuary and Scruffy for heading up the beachside fun and adventurous night-time driving!
