Reading Tai-Bo
This week I want you to flip to the front of the book you’re currently reading. Find the first action committed by the main character. If the author has done her job, this action should be something that defines the character for you, the reader. Something that explains a little bit about what makes her tick. What she is normally like and what she would like to become. Here are a few first actions for your enjoyment.
“Ender nodded. It was a lie, of course, that it wouldn’t hurt a bit. But since adults always said it when it was going to hurt, he could count on that statement as an accurate prediction of the future. Sometimes lies were more dependable than the truth.”
“I’m pretty sure my camp knapsack is not supposed to be levitating off the sidewalk of Fifth Avenue. Whoopsies. I make a (somewhat) discreet lunge for one of its red straps and plant it back next to my feet. Tee hee.”
“Hadassah held her mother, tears blurring her eyes as she stroked the black hair back from her mother’s gaunt, pale face. Her mother had been beautiful once…Lifting her mother’s hand, Hadassah kissed it tenderly. It was like a bony claw, limp and cool.”
Matthias cut a comical little figure as he wobbled his way along the cloisters, with his large sandals flip-flopping and his tail peeping from beneath the baggy folds of an over-sized novice’s habit. He paused to gaze upwards at the cloudless blue sky and tripped over the enormous sandals. Hazelnuts scattered out upon the grass from the rush basket he was carrying. Unable to stop, he went tumbling cowl over tail.”
Here are the books that belong to the quotes in random order:
